A peaceful goodbye at home
Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is one of the hardest decisions an owner can face. At home, your cat or dog can remain in a familiar, quiet place, surrounded by the people they know. Our veterinarian will explain each step, move at a gentle pace and give you the space you need.
We provide end-of-life visits across our service area in and around Amsterdam and Amstelveen. If you are unsure whether we visit your neighbourhood, please contact us and we will confirm.
When might it be time?
There is rarely one single sign. We look at your pet’s comfort, mobility, appetite, breathing, sleep, interaction and whether difficult days are beginning to outweigh good ones.
- Pain or distress that can no longer be controlled well
- Difficulty breathing, eating, drinking or moving comfortably
- Loss of interest in family, routines or favourite activities
- Repeated crises or a clear decline in quality of life

What to expect during the visit
Time to talk
We begin by discussing your pet’s condition, your wishes and any questions. We will explain the process clearly and make sure you are comfortable before continuing.
Gentle sedation
Your pet is usually given medication to become deeply relaxed and sleepy. You can stay close, hold them or sit beside them in the place they feel safest.
A peaceful passing
Once your pet is fully relaxed and unaware, the veterinarian gives the final medication. The passing itself is normally quiet and painless.
Space to say goodbye
There is no need to rush. We will give you privacy and time with your pet, and we can guide you through the practical next steps when you are ready.
Aftercare and cremation
We often arrange a cremation pickup service for clients, so that your pet can be collected from home after the appointment. We will discuss the available arrangements with you and, whenever possible, organise them in advance.
You may also choose to make your own aftercare arrangements. We will respect your wishes and explain what is practical.
Planning ahead can make the day a little easier
If possible, tell us about your aftercare preference when arranging the visit. If you are not yet sure, we can talk through the choices with you.
If your pet deteriorates
Please contact HomeVet during our working or calling hours so we can discuss your pet and our availability. HomeVet is not a 24/7 emergency service, and because our veterinarians are travelling to existing appointments, we may not always be able to attend immediately.

Common questions
Can family members be present?
Yes. You can decide who should be there, including children, and we can help you think about how to prepare them in an age-appropriate way.
Can my other pets be nearby?
Often they can. Some owners find it helpful for other pets to be present or to have a chance to approach afterwards. We can discuss what feels right for your household.
How long does the appointment take?
We do not want you to feel rushed. The timing varies, but we allow time to explain the process, let the sedation work fully and give you space afterwards.
What if I am not certain yet?
Please call us during working hours. We can discuss your pet’s comfort and quality of life and help you understand whether treatment, palliative support or euthanasia may be appropriate.
